On September 11, 2001, NY Firefighter, Stephen Siller, his fire gear strapped on his back, ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel toward the World Trade Center to join with his company NYFD Squad 1, to help save the lives of others. The annual Tunnel to Towers Run retraces Fireman Siller's final heroic steps. Sue Theise wrote the poem below after the Tunnel to Towers Run in 2002.

In Memory of Stephen Siller

On an unbelievably beautiful day
Two thousand people went out of their way
To honor a hero and,
In their own way, to pray.

En masse they gathered
To honor a man
Who ran to the inferno
To lend a hand.

They traced his path
From Tunnel to Towers,
But on this day
There were no horrors.

Instead they witnessed
An incredible sight–
A tribute quite awesome
Overwhelming, yet right.

Flag-bearing firemen
Lined the way,
A memorial to Stephen,
A proud display.

We were honored to run there
What’s now holy ground,
To remember a hero
Whose deed was profound.

He’s now in a place
Where the fires don’t burn.
We blessed him, we thanked him
In our way, we mourned.
