Remembering Tim Magee

Remembering Tim Magee

We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Tim Magee, one of the first club members, at the much too early age of 79. Tim was tragically struck by a car on June 10th near his home in Florida while walking in preparation for a trip to the Grand Canyon.

Memories from Club Members

Beck Thurn’s Tribute

I first met Tim and Joyce in the early 90’s in New York.  Tim was a member of the 9 o’clock running group at Rockland Lake near Gongers , NY and a charter member of Rockland Road Runners.

What first comes to my mind is that Tim was a brilliant man.  He married the love of his life and& they had three successful children – Bill, Sally and Patrick, and two grandsons.  Tim was a Navy veteran who served Vietnam on the Mekong River.

Joyce and Tim are originally from Ohio and knew each other since grade schools.  Tim was an avid stamp collector all his life.  Ellie McKenna and I had the good fortune of traveling to Italy in 2000 with Joyce and Tim.  It was a memorable trip!  Tim was always prepared for the unexpected carrying duct tape, tissues, gadgets, etc. He had been an Eagle Scout and made sure he was always prepared. Joyce and Tim traveled the world extensively, I’m not sure what country they would not have seen.

I remember Tim having some fancy dance moves at the runner’s parties!  I can still hear his laugh.  Words can not express the sadness I feel in the shocking loss of Tim’s life.  He had been walking for hours as he prepared to climb the Grand Canyon in September.

Tim’s written wishes were “cremation” and “party on.”

Tim and Joyce were very early members of the club. I believe they held membership number 3 and 4. They often hosted meetings and functions at their house.

Tim was a fairly competent runner completing numerous marathons. He had a great laugh along with his sense of humor. I never saw him angry or disappointed in his race results, even if he knew he could do better.

Along with being a volunteer fixture at all club activities he was an avid gardener growing some of the biggest tomatoes imaginable.

Tim was always so full of life and energy. With a spirit of service, he was always the first to volunteer at any RRR race or activity. He was also the first and last on the dance floor at the RRR Holiday Parties! He worked hard, played hard, and danced hard! With his wife Joyce, “Team Magee” was a key element in the early years, leading to the RRR success still enjoyed today. Rest in Peace Tim

Tim was always the person with the smile, the wisecrack and the encouragement for everyone around him. We became friends through running almost 40 years ago, and that friendship extended to birthday dinners, holiday cookie swaps and gift exchanges (I’ll always remember Eloise!) and sharing life’s events. While running, we would see each other regularly, which changed as we stopped running and moved away from Rockland. But occasional visits (far too few!) and zoom calls kept us in touch. We are greatly saddened by the loss of such a good person and friend, and extend our condolences to Joyce and his wonderful family. May his memory be for a blessing.
