RRR Fares Well at NYRR Club Championships

RRR sent a contingent of 17 runners to compete in the annual New York Road Runners Club Championships, held Aug. 3 in Central Park. Separate races were held for the men and women over a 5-mile loop course in the park. Race conditions were much more comfortable than in previous years, with temperatures in the low 70s and a light sporadic rain offering a stark contrast to humid, 80-degree-plus conditions in years past.
Logan Scott was the pied piper for RRR, finishing ninth in the 50-54 age group and 258th overall in 31:59, a pace of 6:24 per mile. Jonathan Farrell was right behind in 32:04. Ayako Yamazaki was our top female finisher, clocking 36:21, a pace of 7:17 per mile, for 20th in the 35-39 age group and 158th woman overall. She also was chief cheerleader with a cowbell that could be heard in the distant reaches of the park!
Congratulations to Marie ‘Grandma” Killeen for capturing her age group, 75-79, in 46:20, a pace of 9:16 per mile. Further kudos go to John Singer and Benny Kim. John finished second and Benny fourth in the men’s 70-74 age group with respective times of 38:49 (7:46 pace) and 41:27 (8:18 pace). Also placing well in age-group results was Enilda Indyk, fifth in the women’s 65-69 bracket in 47:40 (9:32 pace).
Although our open team did not have runners to score, our Swifty Sixties group came through as usual. The women’s 60+ group was fifth of seven teams and now stand in seventh place of 13 teams after six races in the 2013 NYRR scored race series. The men’s 60+ unit was eighth of 12 teams and now are positioned ninth of 14 teams in the year-long standings.
The rain picked up a little after the races were over, but it didn’t dampen our post-race festivities as we shared delicious hero sandwiches and salads brought by Enilda from Bella Vita deli, a fruit bowl courtesy of Barbara Paer, and beverages arranged by Jamie.
