The Bill Fortune Memorial RRR Summer Track workouts recently concluded another successful 18-week schedule. An average of 35 to 40 runners regularly attended every Wednesday at the Pearl River High School track to participate in training sessions meant to increase speed and strength, boost confidence at faster training paces and generally sharpen one’s fitness level.
Under the tutelage of coaches Jamie Kempton, Jesse Hackell and Bernie Casserly, the workouts helped runners of all ability levels – from first-timers to old-timers – reach their racing and training goals. The season was bracketed by a pair of three-mile time trials at the start in early May and the finish in late August, and the training consisted mainly of interval/repetition workouts ranging in distance from 200 meters to 2,400 meters.
Along the way we departed from the regimented track schedule twice to hold hill workouts at Bear Mountain/Perkins Memorial Drive and at Rockland Lake. Other highlights included the Run Your Best Mile and the Whistle Workout. At the conclusion of the final time trial we celebrated another satisfying season with a mini-party including delicious hero sandwiches and beverages provided by the club and partly defrayed by donations from the participants.
